About this outing
Until 1974, miners in Ramsbeck brought lead and zinc ore to the surface. At the Sauerländer Besucherbergwerk you board the narrow mine train yourself, which takes you about one and a half kilometres into the mountain.
Underground, a guided tour of about an hour leads you through dark tunnels. The guide shows how work in the mine was done, and when a drilling machine is demonstrated you immediately hear how loud it could be down there.
Above ground, the museum in the listed pithead changing building, where the miners used to change their clothes, shows tools, machines and minerals. Allow two to two and a half hours for the mine and museum together.
Good to know: the mine is about 8 to 10 degrees and damp all year round, and the floor is uneven. Wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes. The operator recommends the visit for children aged 4 and over, and pushchairs cannot be taken underground. As seats on the train are limited, the operator recommends booking in advance.
